Stephanie's Story: A Goalkeeper's Assist

During one of the most frightening moments of my life, Madi became my biggest champion.
Read Stephanie's Story

We don’t always mark time by days or years on a calendar; we mark it by life's pivotal moments. When I remember the lump, I don’t immediately think about how old I was or even what year it was. I just remember that my daughter was preparing for her final soccer season as a goalkeeper in college while trying out for NWSL teams.

That summer, when I felt that lump in my breast, I got a standard mammogram, which came back clear. However, something inside told me something wasn’t right, I needed to know for sure. I pushed for an ultrasound and a biopsy. Then, while on a trip together, I got the phone call that changed everything: breast cancer.

We both wanted to run and hide, and Madi literally crawled under the covers in our hotel room, but together we chose to fight the unknown. During one of the most frightening moments of my life, Madi became my biggest champion.

I chose an aggressive treatment path and underwent a radical mastectomy. That choice allowed me to only miss two of Madi’s games before I was right back on the sidelines watching her chase her dreams, our dreams. Together, we faced the fear, the pain, and the treatment. Through it all, Madi was my champion.

I was fortunate, I had insurance, I had my champion, we caught the cancer early, and I survived. But not everyone is that fortunate. The Pretty in Pink Foundation comes alongside those who are uninsured or underinsured to assist them in their own fight against breast cancer.

I invite you to join AGK, Madi, and me today in delivering a vital assist to Pretty in Pink, so they can continue to be a champion to those facing this fight.

Remember: When something doesn’t feel right, trust that quiet voice inside. Ask another question, request another test, and always keep fighting.

The Pretty in Pink Foundation
provides financial grants to eligible individuals in NC who are uninsured or under insured and need breast cancer medical treatment.
